The oldest and cheapest technology. They're robust and reliable but require regular maintenance (topping up water), proper ventilation, and have the shortest lifespan and lowest depth of discharge. They're being rapidly phased out for home solar in favour of lithium and gel.

- Depth of Discharge (DoD) — How much of the stored energy you can safely use. A 5kWh lithium battery at 95% DoD gives you far more usable power than a 5kWh gel battery at 50%.
- Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE) — How much energy you get back out versus what you put in. Lithium typically delivers 95%+; lead-acid loses more.
- Cycle Life — The number of charge/discharge cycles before the battery degrades. Lithium offers 6,000+; gel offers 500-1,500.
- Warranty — A strong warranty signals manufacturer confidence. Look for 5-10 years on lithium.
